In this video. I'm going to be showing you how I like to create all of my short form video content in this app. Adobe rush. Really you can use whatever mobile video editing app is your preference. I just like Adobe rush because I'm used to using the Adobe Creative Suite this is kind of like a beginner version of Premiere Pro and I really like how the mobile app is laid out. But if you prefer a different app, like inshot or cap cut or whatever it might be totally feel free to use that.
In this video though. I'm going to show you how I use Rush. The reason why I like to edit my short form videos inside Adobe Rush first is because it allows me to more seamlessly repurpose these videos for both reels and tiktok what I mean by that is in my experience. I've found that content that looks native to the platform or in other words. Looks like it's been made inside of that app tends to perform better. So for example videos that are posted on tiktok that have the fonts from the tiktok editor or have the audio's from tiktok or the built-in captions for tiktok tend to perform better than videos that were created for reals and have the Instagram fonts and all of those other visuals associated with Instagram just hosted over on tiktok. So I think to optimize the performance of your short form videos, if you're thinking about repurposing, I know this is not a tiktok course, but for many of us when we're creating reels we're thinking about where else we can post them to get the most bang for our buck when it comes to the time that you're investing creating these so if you want to post them over on tiktok or on YouTube shorts that I think it's worthwhile creating a original version of the video that you can then add your captions. Add your text. Add any of your stickers to in the app to make it feel more organic to the platform. So in the case of a lot of my videos, I like to edit them in rush like I was saying and then I will import them into the reels editor and I will add any text any stickers add captions add an audio to go along with it inside Instagram. So it really feels like it was made for Instagram and then I'll do the same in tiktok. So I'll import it into tiktok add the fonts like at the text in there at the captions All That Jazz and then associate an audio with it as well and post it over there and it'll feel like it was made for tiktok. So that's why I sometimes like to edit my videos in Adobe Rush In addition to just being able to repurpose them and making them feel native to the platform. There's also some features in Adobe Rush that you just can't get Inside the reels editor, which I'm going to show you in this tutorial.
Okay. So now that you know my rationale behind going outside of the app to do this, let's dive in and I'll show you how I'm gonna make my real about how we save water while living in the van which I mentioned in the content brainstorming session. Okay. So let's go ahead and open up adobe rush. I actually have a folder on my phone called content creation where I like to keep some of my favorite content creation apps including Lightroom later YouTube Studio Etc. And that's where I keep Adobe Rush. Okay. So here's what it looks like inside of rush. You can see that we've got our various projects saved in here when we're gonna go and start editing a new reel. I'm just going to press the plus button at the bottom and tap on ADD media. From here. What I like to do is you could go to camera roll and just start selecting videos from your camera roll. But because I am constantly filming so much content for many different projects. I like to create albums inside of my camera roll where I can organize the clips that I need for a specific video. So I'm actually gonna go ahead and tap on albums. If I scroll to the bottom, I've got one called how we save water and this is where I have stored all of the various clips that I need for this particular reel. So I'm gonna go ahead and just start selecting these my tip for this part of the process is if you can think about what the chronological order you want these to show up in is then select them in that order because you'll just save yourself work later down the line. You can always rearrange the order of the clips, but if they started in the right order just a bit easier.
Okay, now that I've selected the Clips in the order. I want them to show up in my timeline. I can also add a project title. So maybe I'll call it how we say. And then I'll add a water emoji and then I can just press create now you can see all of my Clips are added to a timeline just the entire clip from start to finish. So to start editing. I'm just going to pinch and zoom on the timeline so I can get a closer look at each clip and make sure that I edit out the parts. I don't want in the final video. So my quick tip for you when you're editing in a timeline editor like this is you can follow the waveform to figure out when you start talking. So rather than having to press play and watch this in real time until it gets to the point where I want to cut I can see like I know I only want to include the part where I'm talking so I can just bring my line here to the edge of where the audio waveform starts and then line it up tap on the clip and tap on split. Then I can select this part and then just tap delete to get rid of it. And again, I can just scrub to the end of my audio and again just split the clip and delete the end of it and that's a really quick way to just grab the part that you want to keep. Of course if you try it a few times at your line, or maybe you said something in the middle and you want to cut that out too. Obviously, you're gonna have to go back and listen through it. But I know that I nail it on the first try so I can just cut off the beginning and end. Of course if you want to preview it you can just slide back. The beginning of the timeline and press play. Okay, so I've got my intro down now the next part that I had envisioned for this reel and part of why I want to edit it inside Adobe Rush is when I'm saying about how many gallons of water we have and in our van I want to show some b-roll which if you're not familiar with the term, it's basically just additional visuals that you want to lay over your narration clip. I want to show some b-roll of me showing our water tank while I'm explaining that just to give people the full picture. So in order to layer Clips inside Adobe Rush, which you can't do in reals, which I'm doing it here, I'm gonna select this clip that I've chosen and first of all, I'm just gonna go ahead and split the clip and cut out the parts that I don't want to keep So that I have sort of my finalized clip ready here. Then I can select the clip and tap on separate audio. This is going to allow me to have a clip with no background noise to it, which I don't want when I'm using it as b-roll in this circumstance. Then I can go ahead and just delete the audio from it and now it's a silent clip. So in order for me to layer this clip on top of my narration clip or a roll, I'm going to tap and hold and I can drag it to the next layer of the timeline and then I can just tap and hold again to move it along the timeline and position it at the point in time where I want it to appear. Now I also want to do the same thing with this clip where it really shows the water tank from the top down. So I'm going to select it tap on separate audio again. Delete my audio and then again tap and hold to drag this to the second layer of the timeline.
So now I can play it back and see how it's lining up. I can already tell just because obviously this clip goes into the next one that this is a little bit long so I'm gonna actually go ahead and split this again and get rid of the first part. Drag this over a little bit further. Then drag that over to meet it. And then if you want to trim your clip you can also just tap on the end and then drag until it's the length that you want. Okay. So now let's play it back and see how this looks with the b roll. in our van. Okay, cool. That looks good so far but I think I want the clip to end off with me on camera again, so I'm just gonna click and drag that so that we can see me talking again at the end of the clip. Okay, perfect. So now my plan for the rest of this reel is to do a voiceover with some of these clips of me doing the various tasks that allow us to save water while living in the van. So I'm going to do the same thing where I just kind of scrub along the timeline here and choose the points in the clip that I want to keep. So I'm going to split the clip here. Delete this section scrub along again. I want to show me putting soap in and then I think I'm going to split it again. And then cut here and just show me putting the water in. This is another great feature of an application. You can select parts from the center of your clip to remove whereas in the reels editor. You can only really trim off the beginning and end. Whereas here I have complete control over what sections of the clip I want to use. So I'm going to delete that show me adding water split that again. And then we'll move to the point where I'm actually washing. That just helps kind of keep the pace up a little bit more and make it a bit more interesting. I think.
Okay, great. I'm gonna split that and I'm going to delete the rest of this clip because I don't really need it because I've got this overhead shot that I want to use of me washing dishes. So I'll delete that. And again, I'm just scrubbing along and keeping in the part that I want and then splitting the clip where I want to remove the rest. So delete the rest of that clip. Okay. Now we move on to the next section of the real where I'm talking about how I use this little water as possible to wash my face in the van. So again, I'm just gonna scrub along and I want to show me taking off my glasses because I kind of introduces the action of like, okay washing my face. Then I will show applying the cleanser. And rubbing on my face. Okay, and then we're just gonna skip to the part where I add a little bit of water. That's kind of the main point of this. Okay, I'm gonna split it again. And show me adding more water again. So you can see when you have the opportunity to split your Clips. You can make your reels so much more fast-paced because you can cut out the kind of intermediate parts of an action and just show the most important stuff which is essential when you're making short form video content.
Finally. I'm just gonna delete this clip and include kind of last part. Okay, and finally, we've got to the section of the real where I'm talking about showering. So I am just gonna use that part of the clip. I think that looks good. I don't need the whole thing because I gets a bit long and then we'll scrub through and Just going to delete this part. time fully on camera Perfect. And I'll cut there because I didn't actually walk in and we don't want to show that part. Okay, and then I was gonna do a little part of the voiceover where I talk about how like, oh, we do have a shower in the van. Oh and I realize now I've imported the wrong clip for that. That's okay. If you need to add more media part way through your editing Pros as you can just tap on this blue plus and I'll select media. And again, I'll go back to albums back to where I have all this footage and make sure I select the right part. I think it might actually be this clip. okay, so I'm going to delete this because I don't need it and scrub to the part yet. Perfect. Okay, and I'll cut this out. And again, I'm just scrubbing along and keeping the action that I want. And then I'm going to split the clip again and delete the end. All right. So now I've put together basically the visuals for this reel which we can watch back. Okay. Now the rest is just these visuals. I don't have a voice over here yet. But Adobe Rush does have a really nice voice over feature. So I'm gonna go ahead and record that now. But before we do that, I actually want to make sure that the audio on the clips that I don't need audio on is muted for this. I do want to include some but I'm gonna make it quieter so you can see that there are different editing options along the bottom here. I can select this clip and then tap on audio and you can see that I can change the clip volume. So I'm just going to turn it down to like 15 and then for these other ones, I'm going to either turn it down to 15 or just mute it entirely. So for this I'm gonna turn it quite down and then these I'm just going to mute. This can be muted. This can be muted. This also muted and that as well.
So now I have the audio that I want and the audio that I don't want is muted. So we're good to go. So now I can do is just line up my blue line on the timeline where I want to start recording my voice over which is here. Then I can go back to the plus button and I can select voiceover. Now you can see it's added another layer of audio and a little red button. That's the record button. So I'm going to go ahead and press that record button then it's going to count me down. To the point where I'm ready to record my voice over. The first way we save water is by really being strict about doing dishes only once a day and using the minimum amount of water necessary to get everything clean next when I wash my face. I use just a tiny squirt of water. It really surprises you how much little you can actually use and still get a clean face finally when it comes to showering. We like to shower at campgrounds or gyms as much as we can. We do have an outdoor shower in the van, but it uses a lot of water to shower. So if you can find a different place to shower then that is gonna be the best way to save water. Okay, that's not necessarily the best voice over I've ever done but you get the idea of how you can watch back your video while you record it. So it gives you a sense of what you're supposed to be saying, when okay, and this is normally the stage that I like to leave the video out when it comes to editing in Rush. This is kind of my original or base layer of the video when it comes to putting it in reals and in tiktok, I'll want to add captions background music and probably some Additional text just to really highlight what I'm talking about in each section and make it more visually interesting. So what I'm going to do is press the export button in the top right hand corner. Normally. I like to select the 1080p match frame rate option but automatic works too. I just find sometimes with automatic I can get funny frame glitches. So normally I just select this option and then I just press export now you're going to want to just make sure that your phone is just sitting there while it exports and you don't like lock it or change apps or anything, but it doesn't take too long. And then once it's finished exporting what I like to do is go ahead and pop out of the app go over to Instagram. And I will press that plus button again select real and then I will import this video. From my camera roll now. I'm just gonna tap next and like I was saying I can go ahead and add my text add my background music Etc. So I like to start by adding captions. So it'll transcribe everything that I'm saying, which is awesome. This is my personal favorite captions format, but obviously they all work. It's just a preference thing add my captions somewhere and then I like to add other titles so I might write how I save. Water in my van, then select, you know the size that I want can change the color to whatever I want it to be and like I was showing before I can make it so that it only shows up at the beginning or in whatever section. I want. I can change the timing of it and of course I can tap on music and I can add whatever trending song. I think we'll go well in the background. And change the level of that to probably around like 10 or maybe even like seven or something so that it's quiet enough that you can still hear me talking and that is how I edit my short form videos in Adobe rush so that I always have a nice clean original version to import onto the various platforms.
I hope you found these tutorials on editing reels helpful. Make sure you catch me in the next video where I'll talk a little bit about creating stories.
