I know we all love Instagram, but what if I told you that starting a secondary Evergreen platform could actually make your life growing on Instagram a little bit easier wait adding a second platform to my strategy is gonna make my life easier. What are you talking about? Katie just hear me out. Yes on the surface. I know that it seems like a lot of additional work but having this Evergreen content strategy in place can actually give you a really really wonderful starting point for planning your content for Instagram just in case you're unfamiliar with the term Evergreen content is content that stays fresh and useful whether it's days after you posted it or months or years after you posted it just like evergreen trees evergreen content stays beautiful all year long. There are really three main different Evergreen content platforms that you can choose from when you're thinking about diving in and implementing and Evergreen content strategy, which can then Intern feed into your Instagram content strategy. The first is YouTube YouTube is a free video sharing website, which I'm sure most of us are familiar with that's probably where you found me YouTube has the benefit of providing both search discoverability and a recommendations algorithm, which also helps you get discovered.

So as a Creator on YouTube, you can really take advantage of SEO in order to appear in more search results and you can also take advantage of the home page and all the different recommendations that YouTube does so that you can get your content in front of new viewers the second Evergreen platform that you might want to consider is starting a podcast again podcasts can really be about anything and everything. There's kind of two main formats that we see a solo show or an interview based show. And whichever you pick is going to depend on your Niche what you actually want to share with your audience. And also what's gonna be most useful for you to repurpose for your Instagram podcasts provide really great discoverability because Again of the SEO functions so people can find your episodes through searching in Spotify or searching on the Apple podcast platform and the other really great thing about podcasts is that they generate really really loyal listeners because people tend to press play on a podcast and listen through the whole thing because often people are consuming podcasts while doing something else. So there are a lot less likely to skip past your content than they would be if it was say like on YouTube or even an Instagram post. So if you can get people to start listening to your podcast and you provide them value and you're interesting and you're concise, then you're likely to have a very dedicated listener the third Evergreen platform that I want you to consider is blogging. I know you might be thinking that blogs are dead. Oh, that's so 2010s, but blogs can still be a really really effective way to reach people who just prefer to read the written word rather than listening to a podcast or watching YouTube video plus blogs have the advantage of being Super SEO optimizable because your blog is essentially just a post full of keywords that is going to allow your website to show up in Google search results when people are looking for what you are sharing bloggers also commonly used Pinterest, which is a really great visual way to drive traffic to their blogs.

So blogging can be still a good form of Evergreen content even in the 2020s. So no matter what format this takes YouTube podcast or blogging and I think the format you choose is really going to be based on what you like to create the most do you like making videos? Do you like recording audio or do you like to write once you've chosen which Evergreen platform you would like to create content for this content is gonna form what I call your Cornerstone content. This is content that is longer form and high value and it is ultimately the Cornerstone of your content strategy across all of your platforms. It is gonna be a big time commitment to produce this content because by Nature it is Longer it's higher production value. So it takes a while to make that podcast or write that blog post or make that YouTube video. But once you've created it, it's really really useful for repurposing into all kinds of different content. Especially if you struggle with coming up with different unique content ideas for Instagram on a consistent basis then having this Cornerstone content in place can be a really great way to draw ideas for micro content, which is what we call content that you post on Instagram as compared to your Cornerstone content on these Evergreen platforms.

I wanted to take you through an example so you can see what this really looks like. So we're gonna walk through what it would look like to use my Vlog Channel Katie and Dan in a van select one of the videos that I made for YouTube and then turn it into four different types of Instagram content. So hopefully you can see how after you've put in a time to create this one type of Evergreen content. It can really continue to serve you. And again through many different types of content on Instagram. Cornerstone content is also great because it provides a unifying theme across a set of posts that you're creating for Instagram. So it's kind of like a built-in strategy in itself. So let's dive in I'm going to show you how it's done. Let's repurpose some content together. So we are starting out here on the Katy and Dan in a van YouTube page and we are going to use this as I was saying as our Cornerstone content when you have a platform like YouTube Blog podcast So much in there that never sees the light of a social media feed because it's just so packed with value and there's just, you know, a lot of content there. So the goal with this is to go in and extract some content from these videos that we can then use on Instagram. So for the sake of this example today, I'm going to be drawing from our van life LA video and I'm also gonna take some content from our van life in Nevada, Arizona and Utah because I think there's a few fun moments in there. The first type of repurposed content that we're gonna make together is a teaser real now, I am gonna do this a little bit differently than we would normally think about a teaser for a YouTube video. I'm not just gonna take one direct clip from like the beginning of the video and add some text on it saying go watch this Live on YouTube now instead. I'm going to select the best clips from throughout the So cut them together in the format that feels like a real like I want to make something that feels like it was made specifically for Instagram. So let's open up Premiere Pro and start the first steps. I'm gonna use Premiere Pro in this example because that's how I edit all of my videos. But if you are repurposing your YouTube content, obviously, you can feel free to use whatever software that you used edit your videos. And actually this is gonna be pretty straightforward. It's something that you could do in an app like cap cut or any of the other popular mobile editing apps and I am eventually going to send this over to my phone to finish it off, but we're gonna start out in Premiere Pro.

Okay, so I'm just gonna bring in the fully exported video and I'm gonna start by creating a new sequence. I'm gonna go into the sequence settings and I'm gonna make sure that actually reversed these Dimensions here so that it's 9 by 16. Because obviously we're trying to make this vertical. So next what I'm going to do is I'm just going to drag this into my source panel and I'm gonna scrub through to find some good sections that I think look like good footage. Okay, I love these clips from Joshua tree and this part of the video. I'm just kind of talking about a previous video, but it's beautiful. So I might want to use that. So I'm just gonna go ahead and press I to set my endpoint and then oh to set my out point. Then I'm just gonna click and drag that onto my timeline. So it says the clip doesn't match the settings, but I'm Gonna Keep the settings because I want it to be 9 by 16. So I will obviously have to adjust those clips later, but that is fine. I'm just gonna keep going through and selecting. whoop different footage that I think is going to look good for my kind of like Supercut of this van vlog. What I love about reels is you can really just make like a beautiful montage and set it to some trending music and that's a great piece of content. So it can be really easy to repurpose Vlogs in that way. If you've got some beautiful b-roll like this. Just going to scan through and see if there's anything else that I want to include but I think that might be a really good start just right there. Maybe I'll show the Hollywood Sign hike a little bit. We'll see how the cropping looks when I actually start making it vertical. Alright, so now I've gone through the Vlog and I've just picked out some of the kind of more fun quick clips. And now I'm just gonna change the scale. until they're the right size and of course, we're going to play it back and make sure that the cropping doesn't Have any errors in it or that we need to change the position of the frame. And of course, there's a chance that at the end of my Clips actually I was gonna cut that out. But now I'm like that's kind of cool. Maybe I'll keep that but I will cut there to position it differently. Can do that. Yeah, so I'm gonna make that. I actually could probably make that a little bit smaller because it does fade just completely to block so. it's not as obvious that it's yeah, I think that's cool.

Now the cool thing about this shot because it's straight down instead of scaling it up. I can actually just rotate it and it's still Still works. Okay, and then for this one? Just gonna move it over. Scale it up. And watch through because the framing does change. I don't like how that framing ends up. So I'm just going to make a cut. and then Make that transition a bit quicker. Okay, and I think we could. Position that a bit better and I'm going to rotate it so that that's actually straight up and down. Make it a little bit bigger. Perfect. oh and then of course, I rotated it so we will make the cut there And then change our rotation again. So the Horizon is straight. Okay. Scale that up. Okay, and there we go. We've got a little bit of a montage that we can post on reels taken from the Vlog. So I'm just gonna go ahead and save that and then we are going to export it as an mp4 and then I'm gonna send it over to my phone. Now all I'm going to do is airdrop this file to my phone and then we can take it into reals and continue editing it from there. And like I was saying you can totally do the editing that I just did in Premiere Pro on your phone if you want. Okay, so our video is ready to go. So I'm gonna just go over to Instagram. And go ahead and just create a real. And then I can import this video. And then all I need to do is add some music. And it's pretty much ready to go. I can add a little bit of text if I want as well. So I'm gonna go ahead and add some music that I found earlier that I like that I saw was trending. Perfect. Then if I want to I can add some text to the end that says something like see the full vlog on YouTube and maybe I would just kind of put that at the bottom. Wherever I think it's gonna look cute at the end, maybe up here. Yeah, I will do that. grab a color from the background and then maybe I'll add. in a different font Link in BIO or something like that.

Also, I wouldn't necessarily have to promote the Vlog at all. Like I think it's like very valid content to just post this without any mention that it's even from a YouTube video and it's just for the sake of having more content on your Instagram. So that's an option to but if you want to get in that call to action you can do it so you can see how you can take some great clips from your YouTube Vlog and turn it into content that feels like it was made for Instagram and subtly promote your YouTube channel at the same time.

So that's the real teaser done and dusted what else can we do with a YouTube video to make some Instagram content? Well one option is creating a graphic Carousel based on the information that you shared in the video. So with this video that we've been working on the van life Los Angeles. I was thinking that I could create a carousel about the best things to do and see in LA in the surrounding area. So, you know, we are gonna head back on over to canva. Our folder is already. Starting to look nice and full with our content here and I'm gonna go ahead and we're gonna create another design. I think we're gonna go for another 1080 by 1350 size Carousel because for this one because I'm talking about things to do and see around La. I think it'd be really great to include some pictures. So for this you could totally go through and take some screenshots from your Vlog like literally just pull up the image and then inside Premiere. Anyway, if you press shift and E, it will export just the frame from your video. But for a lot of us who are vlogging chances, are you have some photos just on your phone from when you were filming the Vlog, so that's what I'm gonna upload for the sake of this carousel. And then I'm going to use the information that I shared in the Vlog to make this Carousel creation process easier because I'm not having to completely start from scratch. I already listed all of these things in the Vlog. So I'm just gonna pretty much type them out and lay it over some photos. So I think this is a good photo to start off our carousel.

So sometimes I like to add a drop shadow or lift on the text to get it to stand out a little bit more from the photo. my eyes open the map and just like in the last Carousel that you saw me make I'm gonna throw this little swipey icon on it so that it's clear that you can swipe through to see more. Okay. So now that I've added my text to my cover page, I'm gonna add another one and then we're just gonna start filling out information about what to do. So I'm gonna start with Joshua Tree now that I've got the text formatted how I want for my follow-up slides. I'm actually just going to duplicate this. And then I'm going to get rid of my background image and then pull in my next one and then I can make sure that the text is positioned in the same spot on each slide. Of course because the style of Carousel I'm doing the text is not going to work necessarily in the exact same spot every time so I'll move it around as needed. so long I can trust my side. I'm sick of being so tired and I can't keep now. I may end off this Carousel with another photo of the van just to kind of prompt people to follow for more van life content. This obviously isn't from LA. But I think it's a good photo of the van nonetheless. Finally, I'm just gonna add a few little icons. So the bottom left hand corner to just try to remind people to engage with the content. You see this a lot on carousels. I think it's just a nice addition to the last slide. And then I'm just gonna make them all. White, so it's easier to see. There we go. And there is a fairly quick Carousel based on the content of Vlog and you can see again. This is not necessarily to promote the video itself because content that is posted purely for promotional purposes on Instagram is not going to perform that well. This is content that is posted for the sake of sharing what to do. If you live in Van life in La so it's adding value and providing entertainment and inspiration for the audience. It's not just asking them to go watch my YouTube video.

So graphic carousels another effective way to repurpose your Cornerstone content another piece of content that you can create based on. Your Cornerstone content is a meme this is where it gets kind of fun because you can turn yourself into a meeting which is what I'm going to show you how to do here. So we're gonna go back to Old Faithful canva and again create another design for this one. My preference is to make it the typical Instagram. post Dimensions I think making this 4x5 or vertical just a little bit much. So we're gonna go with square now. I'm going to go over to elements and we're gonna look at the frames again because we're gonna put our GIF our selection from the YouTube video into a frame. That's how we're gonna format it on canva. So there's lots of different frames to choose from this can really be up to like what you like the look of all kinds of stuff. I was kind of leaning towards Doing this one with a border. I think that's kind of cute. So I'm gonna select that frame and position. It just roughly on my canvas here. And again, I'm going to change the background.

Okay. Now I'm gonna go over to my uploads. Now. I previously uploaded the entire version of my YouTube video just from the same file that I uploaded to YouTube. I uploaded to Canvas as well and I'm gonna click and drag it into the frame then when I select the video I can click on the time code up here. And I'm going to select just the section of the video that I want to turn into a gif. So it's right around here. I mean, I'm truly embarrassing myself with this but it's funny. So, okay and I'm gonna click done. So to be clear here. We aren't technically making a gif because we're going to export this as an mp4 because you can't upload a gif to your Instagram feed but it will end up feeling like a gift when you see it on Instagram because Instagram will automatically just Loop your feed videos to finish this off. I'm just gonna add a funny caption. I'm just gonna keep this caption really short into the point because I feel like this Goofy video does all the talking. Okay.

So like I was saying when we are ready to get this file onto our computer so that we can upload it and schedule it. You're just gonna want to make sure that when you download it you do download it as an MP4 video which canva is gonna prompt you to do. This is the format that you're going to want in order to upload it to your Instagram feed later. The final form of repurposed content that we can draw from a YouTube video as our Cornerstone content is of course photos. We can make a carousel of some still images from our video you can do this as I was showing before by exporting a frame from Premiere Pro or you can simply open up your video and then go ahead and take a screenshot on your computer like this and then you can edit the photo in Lightroom. And of course upload it as a carousel later. I feel like with this it's all about just finding framing that looks kind of good. And maybe taking advantage of some more memorable or fun moments that you want to document as well. But I think this can be a great way to translate your latest Vlog into a photo dump for your Instagram feed. Okay? Thank you for sticking with me through this repurposing session.

Hopefully this has given you a sense of how you can take content from something that you've already made and turn it into new fresh and unique pieces of content for Instagram and it just removes that extra step of having to do a ton of brainstorming and coming up with brand new ideas. There is so much inspiration and value just sitting in your pieces of Cornerstone content waiting to be repurposed for Instagram. So I really encourage you to use this strategy as part of your content creation.
